Red Stars dropped by Current, drop to eighth

Chicago Red Stars 1-3 Kansas City Current

BRIDGEVIEW, IL–The Chicago Red Stars (soon to be “Chicago Stars FC”) dropped their league-worst ninth home match, 3-1, to Kansas City Current. With both Portland and Bay FC winning this weekend, the loss drops the Red Stars to eighth place in the table and a first round matchup against Orlando Pride on Friday.

The Current scored all three of their goals in a ten-minute span in the first half. Nichelle Prince sent a thru-ball to Michelle Cooper who would beat Alyssa Naeher far post in the 23rd minute. Three minutes later, a botched clearance in front of goal resulted in Debinha making it 2-0. A slip and fall in front of the goal by Cari Roccaro would allow Prince to make it 3-0 after Natalia Kuikka blocked a shot from distance.

Allie Schlegel added a consolation goal in the 52nd minute for the Red Stars making her joint-leading goal scorer for the Red Stars with Mallory Swanson. However, it would be Kansas City’s Temwa Chawinga who finished with the Golden Boot this season in the NWSL.

The Red Stars now face Orlando in the NWSL Quarterfinals on Friday at 7pm CT on Prime Video. Kansas City finished as the second seed and will host North Carolina Courage on Saturday at 11am CT on CBS.
