The runners up from the English Premier League last season met the runners up from the Scottish Premiership for the first time in a competitive match inside a packed Anfield.
Liverpool started off on the front foot when Darwin Nunez came close with a decent strike on the turn. The Uruguayan, however, was foiled by keeper Allan McGregor who made a great point blank save to keep the tie level.
The Reds finally got the goal their play deserved from a free kick when Nunez got tackled from behind from 25 yards out from goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold curled a beautiful shot into McGregor’s top corner to make it 1-0 to Liverpool.
Nunez came close to extending his side’s lead with three further chances in the first half but McGregor stood up well on each occasion to save.
With Liverpool attacking the Kop End in the second half you might have thought the flood gates would have opened given the dominance they had enjoyed in the first period. However, the Reds had to settle for a single additional goal to give them breathing space in the match following a spot-kick converted by Mohamed Salah, striking it down the middle to make it 2-0 in the 53rd minute.
Rangers were poor for most of the game, with Allison having just one save to make in the second half. You would however expect a different story in the return fixture at Ibrox given the Glasgow side’s impressive home record and the fact that, after three defeats with no goals scored and nine conceded, they really need to take something from the match.
