Sweeney seals 2024 deal with Exeter City

Pierce Sweeney has resigned with Exeter City until the end of the 2023/24 season.

The Defender played a key role in promotion to League One for Exeter last season, securing 19 clean sheets across the 2021/22 League Two season that saw the squad finish 2nd in the fourth tier.

Following a strong year as vice-captain at St James Park, the 27-year-old has opted to stay with the Grecians until the end of 2024.

Speaking about the deal, Sweeney told Exeter City:

“I’m really happy to extend my stay here longer. I was due up at the end of the season but I’ve been rewarded.

“To go into a League One season after the really successful season last year, with an extra year on top as well is really, really pleasing for me.

“This is my club and it’s home for me now. My family are settled and I’ve got a house, I’m very familiar with the city and this football club, and the people associated with this football club.”

Sweeney began his time at Exeter in 2016, joining from Reading before leaving the team to join Swindon Town in June 2021.

Quickly, the two parties terminated the Irishman’s contract by mutual consent, and Sweeney rejoined Exeter a month later.

After playing for several clubs throughout his career, it appears that Sweeney may have finally found his home as the squad gears up for their first League One challenge in ten years.
