The Dutch Formula E champion was linked with a drive at the Grove-based team for some time last season, until it was confirmed that Alex Albon would drive with the squad in 2022.
However, his ties with Williams through his role as a Mercedes F1 reserve driver have surely played a part in handing him a practice session this weekend in Barcelona.
He said:
“Firstly, I’d really like to thank Williams for the opportunity to run in FP1. It’s great for me to get to know the team and drive the FW44, and also to get myself out on track during a Formula 1 weekend.
“Preparation for the test is going well so far and the team have been incredibly supportive of me. I’m very much looking forward to the whole experience in Spain now.”
With Mercedes’ efforts in Formula E ending this season, with the team soon to become McLaren’s venture into electric racing, the 27-year-old has options for the next step in his racing career.
Although more likely options include Toyota’s World Endurance Championship team or staying in Formula E, De Vries is a former-Formula 2 champion and has been said by many to have the talent for F1.
Only time will tell whether or not this test with Williams could lead to something more concrete in the near future.
