F2: Juri Vips takes maiden pole position on a tricky drying Imola

The session started wet after a recent downpour which brought up the question of who would be last across the line as the track was bound to dry throughout the session.

The session did not get off to a great start as Ollie Caldwell put his car into the gravel in the middle of the Tamburello chicane bringing us the only red flag of the qualifying session.

After the red flag left Juri Vips on top of the times, the track had now dried some more leaving for yet more improvements.

Initially there was no improvements as tyre-warming continued to be a prominent theme throughout the weekend with Theo Pourchaire making his way up to 11th being the only notable change in position.

Frederik Vesti was lucky with the red flag as his car was not healthy to start the session and did not get out of the pits before the red flag but with the he delay managed to get out comfortably and start getting himself into the rhythm.

Half way through the session Vips, Jake Hughes and Liam Lawson were the top three with less than one tenth splitting all of them showing how tight the equal chassis’ are.

The last stint had started and still no sign of dry conditions had come. The temperature was simply not warm enough for the track to dry quick enough.

Ralph Boschung was the first to make a mark putting in a time that was a second quicker than the last set of attempts before Vips outpaced him almost immediately by half a second.

Ayumu Iwasa and Jack Doohan managed to split Boschung and Vips but unable to challenge the very front before one more lap was still available to complete.

No one had the tyres to to improve at the very end as the sun started to set and the rear tyres began to overheat it was Vips who took pole for the Formula 2 feature race on Sunday.

Iwasa starts alongside him with Doohan and Boschung behind on the second row. Logan Sargeant  finished P10 and Marcus Armstrong P9 so they will be the front row for the sprint race on Saturday.
