Burnley battle well to earn a point against Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace will leave Selhurst Park disappointed as they drew 1-1 with Burnley in the Premier League.

The Eagles took the lead after just nine minutes when Jeffrey Schlupp netted after a great dribble and cross from Michael Olise. The latter was causing the Clarets all sorts of problems on the right flank, with the 20-year-old shining for the hosts.

However, Burnley hit back essentially straight from kick-off in the second half as Luka Milivojević put the ball into the back of his own net from Aaron Lennon’s low shot.

The result sees both sides remain in 11th and 18th respectively, with Burnley’s point on the road being so important as they continue their fight for Premier League survival.

Palace pile pressure on Burnley

Patrick Vieira’s side returned to Selhurst Park off the back of their 4-1 win away at Watford during the week. Wilfried Zaha and Olise maintained their spots in the starting lineup, with Schlupp coming in for Jean-Philippe Mateta.

It was the visitors who had the first real chance of the game, with Lennon’s shot from outside the box going wide of Jack Butland’s goal.

Tyrick Mitchell, who made his 50th Premier League appearance, pressed forward down the left flank for Palace, but his inviting ball into the area failed to meet a teammate.

Soon after, however, the hosts took the lead. Olise did so well on the right-hand side to get past his man before sending a great cross into the box, which was met by the foot of Schlupp who opened the scoring.

Palace were on top for the rest of the half after the goal, with Mitchell probably thinking he should have done better with his effort in the 18th minute. Zaha, who scored a great brace on Wednesday evening, produced some quality skill to get past Josh Brownhill and the latter was booked for bringing his man down.

As the Eagles looked for their second, Burnley had a spell of pressure in the latter stages of the half, but their efforts in the final third were poor and they went into the break 1-0 down.

Burnley bounce back brilliantly

Despite their poor showing in the first half, Burnley started the second half magnificently. Lennon’s shot from a tight angle on the right was hit low and hard, with Palace captain Milivojević poking it into his own net from close range.

The visitors were very clearly up for the second period of the match and the goal spurred them on, with the Clarets becoming the better side.

Conor Gallagher was so close to dispossessing Erik Pieters on the halfway line and had he have done so, he would have been clean through on goal.

Wout Weghorst, who has been a great signing for Burnley since his arrival in January, very nearly put his side into the lead but he was denied by some great goalkeeping from Jack Butland. The Clarets did get the ball in the back of the net once again, but the linesman correctly raised his flag for offside.

Just minutes later, Zaha hit the post as Palace looked to regain their lead. The hosts began to have some chances of their own, but there was a lack of cutting edge in the final third.

It was all Palace in the final 10 minutes of the match and Gallagher’s teasing low ball into the box evaded his teammates and Burnley cleared. They had one final chance in the latter stages of added time, but Olise’s ball towards Gallagher was overhit and out for a goal-kick.

The hosts will return to Selhurst Park on Tuesday evening for their FA Cup tie against Stoke City, with Burnley facing Leicester City at Turf Moor on the same evening in the Premier League.
