Women’s Football Tokyo 2020: Team GB’s key players of the group stages

Unbeaten in the group stage, winning seven out of a possible nine points, Team GB’s players have been a force so far at the games.

With the majority of the squad making their Olympic debuts they have not let the occasion affect their performance, topping the group to set up a quarter-final game against Australia.

We look at the players we think have made the biggest impact on the squad in the group stage:

Lucy Bronze

Assisting all four goals so far Lucy Bronze has made her mark on the games. The defender has been fundamental in keeping the ball out of GB’s half while also finding space to set up her teammates.

She has been creating chances for the rest of the team while ensuring play keeps moving throughout all areas of the pitch.

As one of the best players in her position Bronze has made an impact both on and off the pitch. A guiding light for the younger players in the squad, her knowledge and experience have helped seen her become a calming voice on the backline.

Ellen White

GB’s top goal scorer Ellen White has scored three of the team’s group-stage goals. Competing in her second games White has a wealth of experience competing on the biggest stage.

She regularly finds space to receive balls from any angle, increasing her chances of finding the back of the net. Her positioning on the pitch combined with her goalscoring instinct makes her an asset to any team.

The confidence and determination she radiates on the pitch is infectious to her teammates whilst you can be sure the Manchester City striker will give 110% every time she steps onto the pitch.

Caroline Weir

Caroline Weir has been replicating her recent fantastic club form at the games. Creating magic in midfield, she has been fundamental to the success of the team.

Weir has been finding particular joy when linking up with Lauren Hemp and fellow Scot Kim Little.

Scoring GB’s final goal of the group stage, and ensuring they secure top spot in the group, she proved why her versatility is such an important trait. She has the ability to keep play moving, while also pushing forward to take up goalscoring positions.

Kim Little

As one of the most experienced members of the team Kim Little has shown proven her value to the squad with her play on and off the ball. She provides balance in midfield and is highly respected among teammates.

Against Chile, Arsenal star was incisive and displayed her attacking intent by helping orchestrate play alongside White, Hemp and Nikita Parris.

In the final group game against Canada, her technical ability paid off when she came on late into the second half. She helped break down the opponent’s defence and find Weir whose deflected strike found the back of the net.
