Academy graduates help Wire to victory

The search for their first win of the season goes on as Warrington defeat the Leigh Centurions 44-18 in a game where youth impressed.

It was business as usual for the Warrington Wolves despite missing six first-team players due to selection for England and injury. Daryl Clark, Mike Cooper, Stefan Ratchford, Joe Philbin and Ben Currie were selected by Shaun Wane for England with Toby King being the injured party.

Leigh had an injury-hit side out due to only being able to select 18 players, but it was still a strong team that was selected by Interim coach Kurt Haggerty.

The game started fast from the Wire, there was a sense of wanting to secure the win early. Which would allow the more experienced players to be rested, and let the academy graduates in the side take the game to the Centurions.

That is how the game unfolded. It only took the home side eight minutes to make the breakthrough via Blake Austin. He carved through Leigh’s defensive line, Gareth Widdop added the extras. Minutes later Steve Price’s side were over again, Matty Davis this time the scorer. He took the short ball before crashing over underneath the posts.

After falling 12 points behind early in the game the Centurions looked to be struggling. Warrington’s second choice side came forward with ease but heading into the break they only saw themselves 14 points behind. Leigh did however bring themselves back into the game with Liam Hood going over from dummy half. providing a much-needed boost for the visitors.

The hope didn’t last long, as the inform Widdop scored and converted his own try to extend the score to 20-6. The former Dally M award winner’s try was followed by one from Josh Charnley, who’s becoming prolific again for Wire just at the right time.

A second try from Leigh saw former Salford sensation Junior Sa’u go over, showing great determination and strength.

Talking of strength, there was a player who showed a lot of strength of character. Step up 20 year-old Eribe Doro. One of the many young talents in the wire side. Doro scored his first try for the club to pretty much seal the victory for the Wolves after Danny Walker had scored minutes earlier.

Leigh were below par once again, but they were playing one of the inform sides in the competition. As we have seen in recent weeks with their win over St Helens when Warrington are playing well they are a tough team to beat.

Another impressive win for the Wolves. The match provided much-needed game time for the younger players in the squad, whilst also maintaining the high standards Steve Price’s side have set heading into the away game against Wigan Warriors on Wednesday.
