Spurs defeated 1-0 by Brighton as pressure slowly mounts on Jose Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion adds more pressure onto Jose Mourinho after two successive losses in the Premier League.

It was not so long ago that Spurs were top of the Premier League, however, a poor run of results in December and an inconsistent January has put a dent to their title aspirations. The loss against Brighton really begs the question of whether the Lilywhites can finish in the top four this season.

To make matters worse, the men from the White half of North London will be without their talisman Harry Kane due to an injury on both ankles.

This will be crucial as Spurs will miss not only his goalscoring abilities but his all-round skills on the pitch. Even though Hugo Lloris is the captain, Tottenham will miss the England International’s leadership qualities.

Also, with Kane now injured, there is now a huge onus on Heung-min Son to be the go-to man in terms of scoring the goals for Spurs.

Yes Gareth Bale is there, but Son has been a regular starter for Mourinho and is the joint top scorer for Tottenham along with Kane with 12 goals. Carlos Vinicius could be an option for Mourinho in the upcoming games, but will he be able to pose the same kind of threat that Kane poses in front of goal?

The other issue for the North London side is in defence and whether Serge Aurier should be playing in the centre-back role. The Ivorian has clearly not gained Mourinho’s trust as a central defender which was evident when he stormed out of the defeat to Liverpool.

Also, the ‘Special One’ chose to go with the inexperienced Joe Rodon who made a crucial error at the back to allow Sadio Mané to score the third goal for Liverpool, which ultimately ended their hopes of getting something from that game.

With Spurs taking on Chelsea at home on Thursday night, Mourinho will want to put this string of bad results to an end, but it will not be easy against a rejuvenated Blues, who achieved their first victory under Thomas Tuchel against Burnley on Sunday.
