Spurs secure Carabao Cup final place after 2-0 win over Brentford

Goals either side of half time from Moussa Sissoko and Heung-Min Son secured Tottenham’s place in the Carabao Cup final.

There would be some VAR controversy in the second half too, but Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham reach the League Cup final for the first time since 2015.

Spurs started the game on the front foot and took the lead after 12 minutes through an unlikely source. Sergio Reguilon’s cross found an unmarked Sissoko, who had ghosted into the box unmarked to head home past David Raya.

The man who defied xG, Heung-Min Son, was the next to have a chance for the hosts. After Spurs created chances from wide areas again, Serge Aurier’s ball found Harry Kane. The Englishman fed Lucas Moura who set the South Korean on the edge of the box but his curling effort was saved by Raya as the goalkeeper had to go down low to his left.

Despite enjoying large spells of possession, Brentford failed to create clear-cut chances against a typically resolute Tottenham defence. Ivan Toney appeared to be their main threat and headed straight at Hugo Lloris for the Bees’ first shot on target later in the half.

There would be one last chance in the first half and again, it would be Spurs with an opportunity to double the lead. Son’s corner was headed goalwards by a combination of Lucas and Toney, with the ball looping towards the far corner. Spaniard Raya was alert and superbly clawed the ball away to prevent the second.

With the away side looking to level proceedings, the game was bound to open up. Brentford’s best opportunity of the contest arrived not long after the interval when Bryan Mbeumo evaded the challenge of Davinson Sanchez. The Frenchman arrived at the byline and pulled the ball back to Toney, who was denied by a strong block by Serge Aurier.

Sissoko was impressive throughout the match, especially when displaying his power to drive past Brentford players. His steal in the Brentford area prompted him to cross to Son, but the 28-year-old’s controlled volley went just wide.

Brentford thought they’d found their equaliser in the 63rd minute through Toney. A corner fell to Ethan Pinnock at the back post, who headed up and over Hugo Lloris. With the Frenchman having got a touch, the ball fell perfectly for Toney to head home into an empty net.

After a fairly lengthy check, the goal was ruled out for offside against Toney, much to the dismay of the Brentford bench. Just minutes later, Tottenham doubled the advantage.

Dropping deep for the ball, Kane received the ball and moved it onto Ndombele. The former Lyon midfielder spotted the onrushing Son, who collected the ball in his stride and powered a finish past Raya. A typical knee slide followed from the recently crowned Asian Football of the Year, Spurs’ job was almost done.

Tottenham’s Championship opposition never gave up the fight but struggled against an opposition happy to concede possession and stay compact defensively.

The next incident arrived with time running out as Josh Dasilva was sent off after a VAR check for a foul on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The Bees bench labelled the decision ‘a disgrace’ but replays had the limited spectators in the attendance grimacing.

That would be the final act as Spurs completed the job to book their Wembley place on 25th April. Their opponents will be decided tomorrow, as Manchester City and Manchester United clash at Old Trafford.
