Callum Ilott qualifies on pole for the 2020 F2 Italian Grand Prix

Callum Ilott is back with a bang as the Uni-Virtuosi driver qualified on pole for the second-time at Monza with Yuki Tsunoda in second and Luca Ghiotto in third.

Qualifying

The one and only qualifying session got underway at the Temple of Speed. Ilott was the pole sitter last time out despite the Brit struggling in the last three races.

Tsunoda was the first driver out of the pit-lane as the drivers poured out of the pit-lane to start the 30-minute qualifying session.

The winner of the Belgium Grand Prix Feature race started his flying lap. The Japenese driver set a time of 1:32.943, but Christian Lundgaard took the pole away from the Carlin driver by four-tenths.

Juri Vips put in a fantastic lap time of 1:32.856 as the Estonian stepped into F2 for the injured Sean Geleal and sat in third.

All of the drivers peeled into the pits with the teams having two sets of soft tyres at their disposal. Mick Schumacher was ahead of Christian Lundgaard by two-hundredths with Jahun Daruvala only six-hundredths behind the ART driver. Dan Ticktum was fourth, Nikita Mazepin was fifth, Yuki Tsunoda in sixth, Callum Ilott in seventh, Nobuharu Matsushita in eighth, Louis Deletraz in ninth and Luca Ghiotto rounded off the top ten at the half-way point of the qualifying session.

Dan Ticktum was the first driver out of the pit-lane for the last runs in the qualifying session which would set their grid spots for the 2020 F2 Italian Feature Race.

The DAMS driver led the pack off drivers away the start line going into the final laps of the qualifying session.

With five minutes to go, Ilott found the pace and towed on the back of Felipe Drugovich, the Brit was able to jump into provisional pole with a lap of 1:31.929, three-hundredths ahead of Yuki Tsunoda.

Mick Schumacher lost it into the barrier at the Ascari chicane as the son of F1 legend Michael binned it as he looked to jump on pole. The session was not restarted after it was red-flagged.

Final Grid For The Race

Callum Ilott qualified on pole for the second-time at Monza with Tsunoda joining him on the first row in second. Luca Ghiotto qualified in third and Christian Lundgaard joined him in fourth. The best qualifying for Roy Nissany who qualified in fifth with Nikita Mazepin in sixth. Despite losing it at Ascari, Mick Schumacher was able to hold onto seventh with Jahun Daruvala in eighth. Louis Deletraz and Dan Ticktum rounded off the top ten.

Juri Vips qualified P11, one place behind his temporary DAMS teammate, as Felipe Drugovich qualified alongside the Estonian in P12. Nobuharu Matsushita will start in P13 with Marino Sato in P14. Marcus Armstrong in P15 with the Championship leader Robert Shwartzman all the way back in P16. Guanyu Zhou in P17, Pedro Piquet in P18, Jack Aitken in P19, Giuliano Alesi in P20 with Artem Markelov and Guilherme Samaia at the back of the grid in P21 and P22 respectively.
