Valtteri Bottas takes pole ahead of the 2020 F1 70th Anniversary Grand Prix

Valtteri Bottas took pole away from Lewis Hamilton by six-hundredths in the final qualifying session at Silverstone, with Racing Point’s Nico Hulkenburg qualifying in third.

Q1

Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean were the first two drivers out of the pit-lane to set their times early while there wasn’t any traffic.

Magnussen set the first competitive lap of Q1 with a 1:28.798, but Grosjean had a quicker lap, going three-tenths faster than his teammate.

Nico Hulkenburg then set a lap-time 1.1 seconds faster than the Haas pair and sat on pole temporarily.

With ten minutes left in the first qualifying session, Lewis Hamilton went on pole with a lap-time of 1:27.231, but Valtteri Bottas pipped him by five-hundredths. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen then pipped the Finnish driver by two-hundredths.

With five minutes of the session left, Lewis Hamilton was first with a lap of 1:26.818, Bottas was tw0-tenths back and Verstappen was a further tenth back from the Fin.

But it would be Bottas who finished first in Q1 with Lewis Hamilton second and Alex Albon third.

Daniil Kvyat, Kevin Magnussen, Nicholas Latifi, Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen were the slowest drivers and knocked out in Q1.

Q2

Grosjean was the first driver out of the pit-lane for the second qualifying session, he was followed out by the Renault of Esteban Ocon.

The Haas driver set a time of 1:28.750 with Ocon going 1.4 seconds faster than his fellow Frenchman. But it was the Mercedes drivers who once again set the pace, Bottas set the fastest time of the race so far with a 1:25.785 with his teammate Hamilton five-tenths back.

And it would be Bottas who finished the second qualifying session in first with Nico Hulkenburg in second and Hamilton in third.

Esteban Ocon, Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz, Romain Grosjean and George Russell were all knocked out from the qualifying session.

Q3

Lando Norris was the first driver out onto the Silverstone circuit with the Mercedes pairing following the McLaren driver.

The Brit set a time of 1:27.250 but Hamilton went two seconds faster than Norris after the first set of flying laps.

With five minutes left in the last qualifying session, Hamilton was on provisional pole with a lap of 1:25.284, Bottas was one-tenth back and Daniel Ricciardo was third one second behind Hamilton.

All the drivers came out with three minutes left in the session as they looked to set their last competitive lap-times. Seven drivers decided to go on soft tyres and three had gone out on the medium tyres.

Valtteri Bottas took pole away from Hamilton in the last lap with a time of 1:25.154, six-hundredths faster than his Mercedes teammate.

Final Grid For The Race

Valterri Bottas qualified on pole, Lewis Hamilton in second with Nico Hulkenburg in third. Max Verstappen in P4, Daniel Ricciardo in P5, Lance Stroll in P6, Pierre Gasly in P7, Charles Leclerc in P8, Alex Albon in P9 and Lando Norris rounded off the top ten.

Esteban Ocon in P11, Sebastian Vettel in P12, Carlos Sainz in P13, Romain Grosjean in P14, George Russell in P15, Daniil Kvyat in P16, Kevin Magnussen in P17, Nicholas Latifi in P18 and the two Alfa Romeo’s of Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen will start in P19 and P20 respectively.
