Liverpool move a step nearer to the title after comfortable win

Liverpool are on the brink of their first league championship in 30 years after a rampant 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp’s men almost went in front after a quarter of an hour. Sadio Mane played a nice backheel to Roberto Firmino, who hasn’t scored in the league at Anfield this season. However he was unable to break his duck, after his curled shot proved a comfortable save for Palace keeper Wayne Hennessy.

The home side did take the lead though midway through the first half. They won a free-kick on the edge of the area which sparked a quick debate on who would take it between Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the latter took it, and bended it beautifully in the top right corner.

Liverpool could have gone two up after Andy Robertson’s free-kick was cleared only as far as Reds’ captain Jordan Henderson, whose volley hit post and fell to Virgil Van Dijk, but his scuffed shot was blocked on the line.

Mohammed Salah then tried an audacious attempt from halfway as Hennessy was caught out of his area, however, it went just over.

But the Egyptian would double Liverpool’s lead before half-time, after getting on the end of Fabinho’s pass over the Palace defence and firing it passed the Welsh keeper.

Ten minutes after the break and it was three. Fabinho turned from provider to finisher, rifling one home from 30 yards.

Liverpool then added a fourth with twenty minutes left. The Merseysiders went on the counter dispossessing Andros Townsend from 70 yards. Salah, released Mané, who slotted it in to the bottom corner.

With the game all but secure, Liverpool decided to give youngster Neco Williams his Premier League debut, and he almost scored twice, but his efforts were first deflected wide, and then then kept out by Palace keeper Hennessy.

Liverpool will be crowned champions if Manchester City fail to win at Chelsea tomorrow. If City do win tomorrow at Stamford Bridge, The Reds would travel to the Etihad needing a single point to win the Premier League crown.
