High flying Leverkusen set for tight affair in top six clash against Wolfsburg

In a top six clash, Bayer Leverkusen host Wolfsburg on Tuesday evening in a fixture that could have a massive effect on the title race.

Leverkusen have hit the ground running since the league returned to action, with two comfortable victories, scoring seven goals in the process.

Wolfsburg on the other hand, have won one, lost one since the resumption of the league. They have, however, picked up more points on the road than at home, so will be looking to continue their fine away form.

Team news

The hosts don’t have any long term absentees but are sweating over the fitness of club captain Lars Bender and striker Kevin Volland who have foot injuries, and defender Jonathan Tah who is struggling with his back.

The visitors meanwhile, are plagued with injury problems. Yannick Gerhardt, Admir Mehmedi, Paulo Otávio and William are all definitely ruled out, whilst Ignacio Camacho and Josuha Guilavogui face late fitness tests on ankle and knee injuries respectively.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz praised his men after performing well since the restart of the Bundesliga:

“I was a little worried we’d lose our rhythm due to the coronavirus break. I have to say our players have recently been really good in putting our instructions into practice. Hats off to the lads. “It will be tough again against Wolfsburg – we’ll have to give 100 per cent over 90 minutes and definitely set out to win the game in the end.”

Wolfsburg manager Oliver Glasner vows that his players have to be better than against Dortmund to get a result against Leverkusen:

“We weren’t at our top level against Dortmund, hence it wasn’t enough on the day. That has to be different against Bayer Leverkusen. It is a tough task but we’re going there to bring three points back home.”

Head-to-head

Their head to head records are very similar, with Leverkusen narrowly holding the advantage, with 20 wins to Wolfsburg’s 15; seven matches have ended in draws. When the sides met earlier in the season Leverkusen were also victorious, winning 2-0 at the Volkswagen Arena.
