Borussia Dortmund cruise to victory over VfL Wolfsburg

Dortmund made it back-to-back wins in the Bundesliga since its resumption by overcoming Wolfsburg by two goals to nil. Goals from Raphael Guerriero and Achraf Hakimi gave the Black and Yellows a comfortable win.

Early on it was Dortmund that looked to be on the front foot, no one able to capitalise on the early attacks for the visitors.

The first 15 minutes of the game were totally dominated by Dortmund who had 71% possession in the opening quarter of an hour.

Dortmund had the first shot of the game in the 16th minute. Thorgan Hazard got the ball outside the box and whipped a shot wide of the target.

Wolfsburg had a chance of their own in the 25th minute. Wout Weghorst’s attempt from a Admir Mehmedi cross going wide of the Dortmund goal.

Dortmund opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Lovely build up play from Achraf Hakimi and Julian Brandt saw the latter play a through pass to the full-back who helpfully passed it on to Hazard and his cross found Raphael Guerreiro who tapped the ball into an empty net.

Hazard had another chance in the 43rd minute, Hakimi playing a lovely low cross into Hazard’s path but the winger’s first time shot went wide of the target.

The best chance that Wolfsburg had in this game came in the 47th minute when Renato Steffen saw the ball at his feet but could only smash the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Steffen then caught a sweet volley in the 62nd minute with Roman Burki able to palm the ball away to safety.

Guerreiro had a chance to double Dortmund’s lead in the 71st minute when Jadon Sancho’s shot deflected into the path of Guerreiro, the full-backs shot going wide for a corner.

In the 75th minute, Wolfsburg defender John Brooks had a chance of his own from a free-kick taken by Maximilian Arnold. The defender’s half volley sailed well wide of Burki’s goal.

In the 78th minute, Dortmund doubled their lead to seal victory. Firstly, Sancho broke away with Erling Haaland to the left and Hakimi to the right. The Englishmen passed it to Morocco international Hakimi, who slotted the ball calmly into the back of the net.

To compile matters for the hosts, Felix Klaus was dismissed in the 82nd minute after a nasty challenge on Manuel Akanji.
