Daniel James set to become Manchester United’s first summer signing as he undergoes a medical

Swansea winger Daniel James will undergo a medical as his move to Man United draws nearer.

The Welsh starlet will become boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signing of his reign after being permanently appointed in March.

With just one year left on his contract at the Liberty Stadium, James is expected to complete a deal reportedly worth £18 million pounds. However, it is understood United will initially pay £15 million up front with £3 million in potential add-ons.

Having agreed personal terms already, James left the Wales international camp to get his Man United move over the line. The 21-year-old had been with his national side preparing for European qualifiers against Croatia (Saturday) and Hungary (Tuesday).

Last season, James broke into the Swansea first team following the club’s relegation from the Premier League the season before. In that period, the Welshmen scored five goals and recorded ten assists.

It is understood that James will be the first of many coming through the door at Manchester United as Solskjaer begins the rebuilding process at Old Trafford. Offering the innocence of youth and an abundance of pace and energy, his countryman Joe Allen believes the winger will be able to make the step up:

“I think he [James] is ready for it. I think it’s obvious the way he has played all season, especially the second half of the season.

When we went down to the Liberty [Stadium] with Stoke he was electric on that day – he scored a goal and basically got two lads sent off.

I think that was a real eye opener for anyone, that this lad is going to go very far in this game, and it seems like this summer it’s going to happen for him.”

The Beverley born star was close to agreeing a move to Leeds in January, even conducting interviews and completing a medical at Elland Road. However, a disagreement between the Swansea owners and chairman held up the deal and left James stranded in Leeds without the transfer being signed off.

James currently has two caps for Wales, scoring one goal.
