In what was an incredibly scrappy first half, the Reds were controversially ahead after less than a minute as Moussa Sissoko clumsily handled the ball. Mohamed Salah stepped up from twelve yards and fired home.
Andy Robertson had his effort turned over the crossbar by Hugo Lloris mid-way through the half, but both sides produced an erratic performance after Salah’s penalty.
Christian Eriksen blasted a rare Spurs shot well over the bar as neither side showed any real attacking intent throughout the first half.
Dele Alli was picked out in space ten minutes into the second half, but the creative midfielder was unable to get a shot away despite losing his marker inside the penalty box.
Liverpool came lose to a second on 68 minutes as a result of Sadio Mane’s driving run. The forward darted past Eriksen to carve open Spurs’ defence, the ball fell to Milner who eventually watched as drilled effort whistled past the post and beyond a helpless Lloris.
Alli came close with a looping effort after receiving the ball from Son Heung-min, but his effort from the edge of the box proved a comfortable catch for Allison.
The midfielder was then picked out eleven minutes from the end by Kieran Trippier’s curling cross, but Alli was unable to keep his header on target.
After being the hero in Tottenham’s semi-final against Ajax, substitute Lucas Moura came close to equalising for Spurs. Son’s long-range effort was only palmed away by Allison; however, at the second attempt the ball was recycled towards Moura. Although, the Brazilian had his snapshot effort held well by Allison.
Spurs had one last chance to salvage an equaliser to take the tie to extra-time when Moura headed a loose ball towards Son, but the Korean was unable to convert.
And the London side were made to rue their missed chances as, with three minutes left, substitute Origi lashed a shot across Lloris and into the bottom corner to hand Liverpool their sixth Champions League title.
