Manchester City crowned Premier League champions

Manchester City retained their Premier League crown by defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 4-1 at The Amex.

Going into the final day needing to match Liverpool’s result, Pep Guardiola’s team recovered from a first-half Glenn Murray header to comfortably dispatch the Seagulls thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s victory against Wolves counted for very little as the Reds finish a point behind City on 97, the highest total for any side not to win the competition.

The Citizens haul of 98 points is only ever bettered by once in the history of the Premier League, when Guardiola’s men accumulated 100 points last season to lift the crown.

This season their battle with Liverpool has created one of the most exciting title races in recent seasons as Jurgen Klopp’s side miss out on a first Premier League despite only losing once all campaign.

Speaking to Sky Sports, former Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling had this to say:

“I’m just delighted, this is exactly what I came to the club for, to win trophies and be in these moments.”

City will now look to complete a treble when they face Watford in the FA Cup this coming Saturday as they look to add to their Carabao Cup and Premier League trophies.
