Bayern Munich legend Franck Ribéry joins Arjen Robben in leaving in the summer

Frenchman Franck Ribery has confirmed that after 12-years at the Allianz Arena he will be leaving when his contract expires in the summer.

This news comes after opposite number Arjen Robben also announced that he would be leaving via the exit door earlier on in the season, with both players leaving following Niko Kovač’s first full season in charge.

Joining the club back in June 2007 from his native Marseille for £17 million, the winger has won all there is to offer playing for the Bundesliga giants.

The 36-year-old has won 21 trophies to date which includes eight Bundesliga’s and a UEFA Champions League which was achieved as they beat rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 back in 2012-13. Ribery got an assist for Robben’s winner that night.

He even came closer than most to getting his hands on the Ballon d’Or, when back in 2013 the winger finished third behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Before the season ends he could also get his hands on two more trophies, with the Bavarian club being top of the Bundesliga with two games remaining, while being four points ahead. The two games remaining are RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Last year’s DFB-Pokal runner-ups will also face RB Leipzig to see if they can make amends for last year’s loss to Frankfurt.

The winger who has 123 goals in 422 appearances for the German side said this about his time at the club:

“When I came to Bayern, it was a dream come true. It won’t be easy to say goodbye, but we must never forget what we’ve achieved together.

“I don’t have a concrete plan for next season yet, I’m not sure where I can go to play football. I will keep playing but nothing is 100% certain yet.”

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also praised the impact the two departing players have had on the club:

“Franck and Arjen are great players. FC Bayern owes a lot to both of them and we will give them a wonderful and emotional farewell.

“They’ve helped shape FC Bayern’s most successful decade with fantastic football.”

Ribery hasn’t featured as regularly this season due to injury but did end up on the score sheet in their  3-1 win over Hannover this weekend.

After the two players depart they will be given a joint testimonial match to mark their successes in 2020.
