Huddersfield relegated to the Championship after 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace

Huddersfield Town are the first side relegated from the Premier League this season.

This came following a 2-0 loss to Palace this weekend where second half goals from Luka Milivojevic from the penalty spot and Patrick van Aanholt confirmed their doomed fate with six matches left to go.

It has been a difficult season for the Yorkshire side which has only seen them pick up 14 points all season. They have only picked up four points since Boxing Day when the Terriers played Manchester United at Old Trafford losing 3-1.

Those points came against Cardiff as they drew 0-0 at the Cardiff City Stadium on 12th January. Since then they have only beat Nuno Espírito Santo’s Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at home. Wolves are the only side to have lost twice to the bottom-placed side twice.

They are the joint earliest side to be relegated to the Championship after Derby County (2008) and Ipswich Town (2002).

This is a completely different story to last season, David Wagner lead Huddersfield to a 16th place finish after drawing 1-1 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge confirmed their survival in the Premier League.

The dire situation caused fan favourite and promotion winning manager Wagner to leave the club by mutual consent with his former side sitting bottom of the English top flight. In the 22 games that the German oversaw the Terriers only took eight points from a possible 66 which left the Yorkshire based team eight points from safety.

The run leading up to the decision that caused the 47-year-old to split from the English club saw him go ten games without a win, and only in the final match did the former Borussia Dortmund II boss get a point.

It took a week for Town to find a replacement for Wagner who had managed them for the last three years. Their new head coach was Jan Siewert who like his predecessor managed the Borussia Dortmund II team.

Joining when he did in January meant that the German had ten days to first strengthen the side and try and beat the drop. However his only signing was Charlton striker Karlan Grant, the day before the window ended.

The striker added a little to their strike force, after playing seven games since arriving from League One he has scored three goals which has made him joint top scorer with defender Mathias Jorgensen. Town did bring in one other player in January as former boss Wagner loaned Jason Puncheon from Palace, but he was of course unavailable on the day the club went down due to his Palace registration

The 32-year-old didn’t really have a real chance to make an impact though, under his former boss he played three matches while Siewert played him three more times before having a training ground bust-up with the midfielder.

Puncheon has since gone on to play once for the Premier League side as his German head coach was forced to use him as a substitute in their 4-3 loss to West Ham United as injuries meant numbers in the midfield were low.

After playing 70 matches in the English top flight, the Terriers’ time will be ending in six matches with those against Leicester City (6th April), Tottenham Hotspur (13th April), Watford (20th April), Liverpool (26th April), Manchester United (4th May). Their final match is against Southampton on the 12th May.
