United paid Mourinho £19.6 million in compensation

The latest financial results from Manchester United revealed that they paid former manager Jose Mourinho and members of his backroom staff £19.6 million when the Portuguese was sacked in December.

The former United boss originally signed a three-year contract when he was appointed in 2016 and signed a one-year extension in January 2018.

The former Chelsea boss was relieved of his duties after a 3-1 loss at Liverpool which left the Red Devils 11 points off the top four in the Premier League.

In the club’s second-quarter financial report they state that the sacking of Mourinho, as well as coaches Silvino Louro, Carlos Lalin and Stefano Rapetti, scout Ricardo Formosinho, and analyst Giovanni Cerra commanded the sizeable compensation bill.

The statement read:

“Exceptional items for the quarter were £19.6 million, relating to compensation to the former manager and certain members of the coaching staff for loss of office.”

While the cost of Sacking the Mourinho was hefty, United still put up record revenues in the final three months of 2018. The total incomings stand at £208.6 million. The broadcast revenue alone totalled £103.7 million.
