Wolves head to Marbella for warm weather training camp

Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers have travelled to Marbella for a mid-season training camp.

The Wolves jetted off to the Spanish resort fresh for a warm weather intensive training camp after an FA Cup fourth-round replay victory over Shrewsbury Town.

Nuno Espirito Santos’ side won 3-2 with a double from defender Matt Doherty and have won their last three successive matches in the League – taking points against Leicester, West Ham and Everton. Wolves are now the  favourites to claim an all in important seventh-place finish.

With the West Midlands side without a fixture until Monday, the club have seized the opportunity for team bonding in the sunny Spanish coast, which is a popular destination among English teams.

Last month Liverpool were in the city, while Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle have used facilities in the area during the last couple of seasons as they look to gain that competitive edge.

Wolves were there last January after being on their worst run in the Championship, going four games without a win, they travelled straight after losing 2-0 to Nottingham Forest.

The mid-season excursion saw the side win three in a row and eventually gain promotion to the Premier League, without the poor form Nuno Espírito Santo is using this as a reward for how well the side have taken to life in the top flight.

After getting into the fifth round of the FA Cup where they will face Bristol City, they will use the time they have in Spain to their advantage as they look to beat Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United.

Speaking to club media, Santo spoke only of the positives of a mid-season training camp:

“This will allow us a lot of things, training hard and having a lot of social time. We need to speak, we need to focus to get stronger and go again. There’s no holiday.”

“It’s a lot of work, a lot of work. We’ll work in a different environment, work on things that we need to work on with time. Being together as a group, as a family, as a pack will be very good for us.”

“Like we did last season, the schedule allowed us to go, and we go to work, to focus and to prepare for the game against Newcastle. There’s no holiday. Holiday is only in May.”

Wolves are only ten points adrift of fifth placed Manchester United and could therefore make an outsider’s charge to achieve Europa League if one of the two teams above them starts to struggle.
