Top dog Mitrovic seals late three points for Fulham in dramatic relegation six-pointer

Aleksandar Mitrovic left it late to secure Fulham the most important three points they have collected so far this season in a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town.

After Aboubakar Kamara missed a penalty after snatching the ball from Mitrovic’s grasp, the Serbian established himself as the top dog of Fulham when the summer signing slotted the ball through the legs of Jonas Lossl to seal the three points for the West London side.

A half to forget

To say the first half was forgettable is an understatement,. Sergio Rico almost gifted the visitors an opening goal eight minutes in when Philip Billing’s shot from distance was split by the Spanish keeper, however, the follow-up shot from Alex Pritchard flew wide of the post, letting Fulham off the hook.

The Cottagers gained the momentum as the half progressed, with Mitrovic proving to be a physical problem for the Huddersfield defence, but the Serbian remained quiet for the majority of the opening half.

More pressure, still no result

Fulham’s momentum from the first half carried over into the second, though Claudio Ranieri’s side still found it difficult to find opportunities on goal. Luciano Vietto’s trickery was starting to get to the Huddersfield defence, but the Cottagers still couldn’t find a way through.

Mitrovic had the best chance of the half when the Serbian leapt onto the end of a Joe Bryan cross from the edge of the area, but the former Newcastle striker’s header was well saved by Lossl. Substitute Kamara was next to test the Terriers’ keeper when the French winger found himself open in the area, but his volley from a Bryan cross was well held by Lossl in the 70th minute.

Late drama seals Fulham the win

The introduction of Ryan Sessegnon 13 minutes from time changed the dynamic of the game, and with eight minutes to go the hosts were awarded a penalty after Chris Lowe handled the ball inside the area.

Kamara and Mitrovic argued back and forth on who should take the decisive spot-kick, with the French winger winning the argument. And in typical fashion, the midfielder’s penalty was saved easily by Lossl.

All hope looked lost for Fulham, but then right at the death Mitrovic sealed the win for the hosts when Sessegnon played the Serb through on goal, and the Serbian slotted the ball under Lossl to seal a 1-0 for the Cottagers.
