$33m for ONE Vote

What ever expenditure the current field of candidates for the Republican Presidential nomination accrue, one thing is for sure. Even the losing candidates will fare better than the English Football Association (FA).

The World Declined the Invite

The true cost of England’s failed World Cup bid has now finally been made public.

According to the latest accounts from the FA, they spent $33m on their bid which attracted just two votes, including one from their own delegate Geoff Thompson who was chairman of England’s bid.

According to the BBC, the England 2018 bid team believed African Confederation president Issa Hayatou provided the only vote they won from a non-Englishman. Hayatou was one of the officials directly accused of corruption in the BBC Panorama program “FIFA’s Dirty Secrets”.

The FA accounts show that although net spending was $22m, the total expenditure over two years was $33m.

Despite that, they could only persuade one uncommitted voter to back their cause.

Local authorities from bidding cities provided $3.9m with a further $7m coming from sponsors.

England’s spending per vote won was the worst of any bidding country for the 2018 tournament.

Australia spent $44m on their bid for the 2022 World Cup and won just one vote.
