The Cross of St George Will Fly Over Downing Street
At one of his first Prime Ministers Question Times since his election in May, Cameron announced he will fly England’s flag, the Cross of St George, over his Downing Street residence during the football World Cup in South Africa.
He didn’t say if this will only be the policy for the whole tournament or just until England are knocked out. As leader of the United Kingdom, the Union Flag is normally flown above their Downing Street residence.
In response to a question by Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi, Cameron told MPs that the move would not cost the taxpayers, and he furthermore expressed the aspiration that the gesture would help unite the ‘entire nation’ behind the English team. Mr Cameron’s Conservative Party won just one seat out of 59 in Scotland, his allies none in Northern Ireland and just eight out of 40 in Wales.
No matter what part of the UK people came from, he said he hoped they would be shouting “come on England”.
“For the purposes of this, I am looking at all the benches here and I am sure that everyone in this House, no matter what part of the United Kingdom they come from, will be cheering ‘come on England,'” he told the House of Commons.
Don’t hold your breath David.
