England’s Matt Fitzpatrick held his nerve to fend of the challenge of former major winners Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Jon Rahm and world number three Rory McIlroy to win the US Open at Brookline on Sunday.

Sheffield born Fitzpatrick claimed his first major title of his career with a one-shot victory.

Fitzpatrick, also won in this course back in 2013 when he lifted the US Amateur title and joins the legend Jack Nicklaus as the only two men to win both that and the US Open at the same venue, Nicklaus won at Pebble Beach.

He is also the first non-American to win both titles. He is now in an illustrious list of former modern day English winners of the US Open. He joins 1970 champion Tony Jacklin and Justin Rose in 2013 in that coveted list.

Fitzpatrick is also the first British winner of a men’s major since Danny Willett was successful at the 2016 Masters.

There was a hint that Fitzpatrick wouldn’t be to far away from grabbing his first major after going close in last month’s US PGA Championship.

Back in 2013 after the success of winning the US Amateur title, he decided to turn pro. His professional debut was at the 2014 Irish Open.

Fitzpatrick’s maiden victory came in October 2015 when he went on to lift the British Masters at Woburn.

Since that success, he has gone on to win the 2016 Nordea Masters and the DP World Championship in the same year.

In 2017, Fitzpatrick triumphed in the Omega European Masters and successfully defended his title a year later.

Two years later Fitzpatrick recorded another victory when he claimed his sixth European tour title by winning the DP World Tour Championship after finishing a shot clear of compatriot Lee Westwood.

After a disappointing Ryder Cup showing, Fitzpatrick bounced back by winning the Estrella Damn N.A. Andalucia Masters with a bogey free final round, to mark his seventh victory on the DP World Tour.

Outside of golf, Fitzpatrick is a massive Sheffield United fan and devotes a lot of time to charity work as patron for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. He visits the hospital as much as he can and enjoys fund raising at Dan Walker’s golf day.
